Monthly Update

Established in 1906, the Kentucky Nurses Association (KNA) is the only full-service professional organization for the state's entire nurse population. In addition to its role to promote the essential role of the registered nurse in health care delivery, the Association serves as an advocate for quality patient care in all settings. From the halls of Frankfort and state agencies to boardrooms, hospitals and other health care facilities, the KNA is the strong voice for the nursing profession in Kentucky.

Advocacy
Nurses Day at the Capitol - All Spots Filled
February 6th, 2025

Nurses Day at the Capitol is just around the corner.  We have reached a maximum registration of 250 attendees and have closed registration early to ensure we are able to seat and accommodate everyone who registered.  This event is a big deal every year and has lead to some incredible outcomes.  In 2024, nurses were in chambers as HB 159 decriminalizing healthcare errors in Kentucky passed through the state house.  That bill would ultimately go on to pass and be signed into law, protecting nurses and other healthcare workers from being criminally prosecuted for mistakes made in the course of their employment.

In what has become an annual tradition, Governor Beshear will deliver remarks in chambers to nurses in the House Chambers. In 2024 he even took a few questions. We will also be joined by other Kentucky lawmakers including State Senator Max Wise and Representative Patrick Flannery.  We are grateful to these lawmakers for their time and commitment to supporting the nursing profession and KNA's advocacy work.

A full list of the KNA's Legislative Priorities are below:

Other Ways to Get Involved with Advocacy

Request Support for an Issue or Legislation

If you would like to request support for an issue or a specific piece of legislation, you can submit a form on the KNA website. KNA Leadership will consider all requests through the lens of the Code of Ethics. Your input and what you care about matters, and we would like to hear from you!

Track Bill(s) You Care About

Kentuckians can track the action through the Legislative Record webpage which allows users to read bills and follow their progression through the chambers.

Get Paired with a Legislator

KNA Member's Only

Human connection can encourage understanding of nurses and the nursing profession and help to affect positive change. Consider joining the Nurse Legislator Engagement Program. This important initiative pairs nurses and legislators to collaborate on ways to improve health and healthcare for all Kentuckians. Once paired you're encouraged to build a relationship with your assigned KY Senator and/or Representative.

Contact admin@kentucky-nurses.org or call 502-245-2843 for more information or to join the program and get paired with a lawmaker.

Run for KNA Office

KNA Member's Only

The KNA has many boards, committees and cabinets that serve different roles in determining the direction and immediate priorities of the association. Many chapters also have leadership roles available. You can always be the change you wish to see by stepping up.

Run for Elected Office

Running for elected office is another way to impact change in your town, county, state, and country. The KNA recently recognized Lexington Mayor, Nurse Linda Gorton as our Citizen of the Year. If running for office is something you are interested in doing now or in the future Healing Politics is a wonderful organization to connect with and learn about how to run, where to find support, and how your nursing skills can translate to politics.

Support Kentucky Nurses

The leadership, staff, and volunteers with the KNA are always working on ways we can support Kentucky Nurses.  While the KNA collects dues, that alone is not enough to sustain the organization and accomplish the goals we have set to support nurses and improve the image of nursing.  There are many other ways that the KNA is working to increase non-dues revenue.  Some cost you nothing at all, while we hope others provide you with value.  Here are some of the ways you can support the KNA and/or the Kentucky Nurses Foundation (KNF) as we work in tandem to support all nurses in the Commonwealth.

Kroger Community Rewards

If you have a Kroger Plus Card, this is something you can do at no cost to you.  The Kroger company will pay the Kentucky Nurses Foundation a small percentage of your purchases at the end of each quarter.  All you have to do is:

  1. Create a Digital Kroger Account *or* login if you already have one.
  2. Click here and search for "Kentucky Nurses"
  3. Select "Kentucky Nurses Foundation" and click "Enroll"
  4. Grocery shop as usual.  That's it.

Nurses License Plate

The Honor Nurses License plate is available to anyone via their county clerk's office.  When you renew your license plate consider choosing the Honor Nurses License Plate.  In addition to increasing the brand image of nursing and potentially having someone let you in to merge (because nurses are awesome), the proceeds from the license plate benefit the KNF and support scholarships and research for nurses here in Kentucky.

Updated Merch Store

We've listened to members who have asked for certain branded items and a refreshed Merchandise store and have delivered.  If you haven't checked it out recently, take a peek at the Updated KNA Merch Store.  Always a great option for gifts or to show your nursing pride.

Nursing News
Nurses are "Most Trusted" Profession for 23rd Straight Year

For the 23rd year in a row, the American public has named nurses the most honest and ethical profession in Gallup’s annual poll, with 76% rating us “very high” or “high.”

Since being included in the survey in 1999, nurses have been the most trusted profession in every year except 2001 when it went to firefighters.

This reflects the incredible trust nurses build with our patients and communities every day. As ANA President Dr. Jennifer Mensik Kennedy says, "What nurses do is nothing short of incredible."

Gov. Beshear Recognizes Accomplishments of Future Healers Kiddo’s Medical Program
The Louisville-based nonprofit introduces children to fields of medicine, science

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 15, 2025) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear recognized the accomplishments of the Louisville-based nonprofit Future Healers Kiddo’s Medical Program. The program introduces students to the fields of medicine and science.

“The Future Healers program is introducing Kentucky kids to the world of medicine and inspiring the next generation of health care heroes,” said Gov. Beshear. “By prioritizing our kids, and introducing them to medical students, we’re showing our young people if they work for it, they can reach their dreams.”

The Future Healers program began in 2021 to help Louisville youth affected by violence. In 2024, the Future Healers program announced it was expanding into three schools in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). The program results from a partnership between 2X Game Changers, UofL Hospital’s Trauma Institute, students at the UofL School of Medicine and the UofL Department of Surgery. Gov. Beshear presented acclamations to all partners to recognize their work and was joined onstage by some of the children in the program.

“It’s amazing to see how far this program has come in just a few years,” said Chris 2X, executive director of 2X Game Changers. “We’re now expanding into three schools, and our program is impacting over 400 kids. We appreciate the support of Gov. Beshear as we continue our work to inspire our youth and change the lives of these kiddos.”

“The purpose of the field of medicine, at its core, is to help people,” said Dr. Keith Miller, trauma surgeon at the UofL Health Department of Surgery. “This program is helping these kids learn about a new and exciting career path. It also serves as a reminder to our medical students and medical staff that we all have a responsibility to give back and help these young kids realize their dreams. It’s amazing to be joined by Gov. Beshear today, and it sends a powerful message to the healers, and the helpers, of tomorrow.”

Since its inception in 2021, the Future Healers program has offered free monthly lessons on topics covering nutrition, mental health, anatomy and first aid, as well as mentorship opportunities with medical students, physicians and other members of the health care community. Last year, the program released the Future Healers Journey to Wellness Personal Journal, an activity and educational book for kids focused on wellness and the medical field.

In 2023, the Future Healers Program won the Kentucky Medical Association Service Award. Earlier this year, a study on the program was published in The American Surgeon, a national medical journal. The study showcased how the program positively influences youth at risk for gun violence.

The Future Healers program has also partnered with the Vanderbilt University Medical Center & School of Medicine, furthering the program’s reach to Nashville, Tenn.

Rebrand Coming Soon

The American Nurses Enterprise announced that its family of brands—the American Nurses Association, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the American Nurses Foundation—is undergoing a comprehensive rebrand after more than 125 years of excellence in service to the nursing profession.

The flame has been redesigned to look like an "N" and a new color palette (shown below) will be part of the rebrand as well.

The Kentucky Nurses Association will follow this model, rebranding our logo and color palette to mirror our parent organization. Re-branding is expensive and labor intensive and won't happen overnight, but over the next 6 months to a year you will begin to see these changes implemented and we look forward to sharing our rebranding implementation with you.

Continuing Education

A reminder that the Kentucky Nurses Association offers a variety of ON-DEMAND Continuing Education courses that you can access at your leisure through the Learning Portal on our website.

Some are FREE for all, some are FREE for KNA Members only, and some can be accessed at a cost.  The hope is that this makes accessing learning as convenient and accessible as possible.  The KNA team is constantly working with our partners to expand these offerings, so check back often.

Did You Know? LPNs Can Join KNA

LPN students and nurses are welcome to JOIN THE KNA. LPNs are an important part of the nursing community and the healthcare fabric of Kentucky and we invite LPNs to consider membership as a way to expand career opportunities and find support. LPN students can join FOR FREE just like any other nursing student.

The American Nurses Association does not currently recognize LPN members but a process to incorporate LPNs is in the works. While they can't *yet* be part of the national organization, here in Kentucky we encourage all LPNs to consider KNA membership and reap the benefits of a professional organization.

Please invite your LPN colleagues and friends to join. Membership (state only) for LPNs is just $10 a month and they have access to all state-specific content, benefits, and opportunities including scholarships, leadership, awards, and more.
