Professional Achievements:
Registered Nurse with over 25 years of hospice experience and over 15 years of oncology experience, including oversight of care delivery, staffing, contract negotiations, pharmacy services, program expansion, and regulatory compliance with federal, state, CHAP, and JCAHO certifications and surveys. Strong background in the education and training of staff, volunteers, contracted vendors, community organizations, professionals from universities and facilities, and healthcare students. Extensive hospice, palliative care, and oncology experience in direct patient care and symptom management. Involved in the planning and management of a non-profit agency budget that grew from a strictly fund-raising budget to $15 million dollars annually. Lead clinician in the mergers with two other hospices, the opening of a free-standing 24-bed inpatient hospice unit, and the establishment of a licensed inpatient pharmacy. Lead a patient care team for a nationally-based corporate hospice with a multi-county service area and an expanding patient population. Project coordinator or collaborator on four grants, including RWJ National Hospice Outcomes Project on pain, dyspnea, and self-determined life closure; RWJ Rural Chemotherapy Administration Project; and the Texas Cancer Council’s Nurse Oncology Education Program development.
Favorite Thing About My Profession:
For over 30 years, nursing has allowed me to positively impact the care of patients and their families, the skills of other nursing professionals, and organizations committed to quality care. As an oncology nurse, hospice nurse, research nurse, childbirth educator, nursing instructor, and administrator, I have always found opportunities to serve, teach, and grow in this remarkable profession.
Virtues:
Regardless of my role, my mission has always been about mentoring evidence-based, ethical client care, anticipating and decreasing the risk of side effects and complications. Effectively managing symptoms, translating the complex into simple care steps that families can process, and facilitating the reframing of goals into achievable moments have remained my passion and core strength.
