The Northern New Jersey Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association (HPNA) Provisional Group is excited to announce that our application to the national organization of Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) was approved in April 2021. We are a diverse group of Advance Practice and Registered Nurses from different practice settings. We came together with a hope to create a supportive and enriching space for health care providers who work in the specialty of hospice and palliative care. After eighteen months of meetings and planning, we successfully met the national organization’s criteria. As it stands, we are the only current HPNA Chapter within the state of NJ.

The Steering Committee and members created a mission statement to guide our growth and future direction: 

This group orchestrated several successful and well-attended in-person gatherings (pre-COVID restrictions) and zoom webinars. The topics were identified through a survey as areas of interest. These activities included the viewing of the documentary Defining Hope, a presentation on Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) as well as a presentation on Hospice 101.

We have many ideas that we would like to implement beginning in 2021 including a book group, journal reviews, ELNEC training, potluck get-togethers, mindfulness meditations, a yoga retreat and more. In June and throughout the summer – our focus will be learning how to provide culturally competent care to the LGBTQI community with a viewing of the documentary Gen Silent and a panel discussion to follow by LGBTQI experts! 

This year as we get our Chapter off the ground, we need your input and participation more than ever! Let us learn from one another, bring in experts to widen our knowledge base and provide support and friendship to one another!

Many of you are members of the National HPNA organization and were looking for local support. We can finally say that we are here and hope you will join our NJ HPNA Chapter.
