Black History Month 2023
A Message from MNA President Dr. Christie Simon Waterman
February is Black History Month. This is a time to recognize the achievements of African Americans and to honor their central role in U.S. history. We at the Maryland Nurses Association celebrate our Black nurses in Maryland and throughout the entire country.
The 2023 theme “Black Resistance” explores how "African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms.” By resisting oppression and discrimination, Black nurses and their patients have experienced successes and progress. In 2023, the celebration of Black History Month is a call to examine the cultural response to establish a safe space where Black nurses can be respected, sustained, and fortified.
MNA recognizes that African American nurses have shown grit, resiliency, integrity, and perseverance to earn the same qualifications and positions as their non-Black colleagues. They have contributed to improving the health of all Americans through the provisions of culturally competent health care services throughout the United States.
Why does representation and diversity in nursing matter? Simple. It improves healthcare outcomes. By breaking down cultural barriers, we enhance both the resiliency and the effectiveness of American health care for all.
While there are still many lengths to go to eliminate underlying prejudices and micro-aggressions faced today by black nurses in the U.S., the fortitude and grit proven by so many incredible African American nurses in the past is more than a glimmer of what is to come. The profession of nursing is stronger, wiser, and more powerful because of our black heritage.
Thank you,
