Adult patients are increasingly expected to participate actively in their healthcare decisions, making patient education a critical skill for healthcare professionals. This session explores how principles of adult learning can be applied to patient education in clinical settings. Drawing on Knowles’ theory of andragogy and other adult learning frameworks, the presentation highlights strategies for engaging patients as adult learners—emphasizing relevance, autonomy, and experiential learning. Participants will examine techniques such as teach-back, motivational interviewing, and discuss how to adapt teaching approaches based on health literacy, cultural background, and readiness to learn. This presentation equips attendees with tools to enhance patient engagement, improve health outcomes, and promote lifelong learning in healthcare.
