Earlier palliative care leads to less costs, lower mortality rates

Cedar Rapids, IA
The East Central Iowa Chapter of HPNA

Providing palliative care within the first 48 hours of admission led to a shorter length of stay for seriously ill patients, less cost, and decreased mortality, according to a study of seven hospitalsĀ in Journal of Palliative Medicine. The researchers also found that readmissions decreased for people receiving a palliative care consult within 48 hours, while hospice referrals increased.
