The Happy Room at Cook Childrens Medical Center is a storage area where we keep donated clothing and toiletry supplies for patients and families. All items are new due to infection control guidelines and are used when a need arises. We often have parents who bring children for procedures or to the Emergency Department and the child has thrown up or had an accident requiring a change of clothes. Since most parents don't run around with that kind of thing, we are able to give them the items needed so the child can be cleaned up and comfortable again. Same for the parents if the child becomes sick on them.
Toiletry items are given to parents who are newly admitted and do not have basic hygiene and self-care products with them. A toothbrush and toothpaste are gold after a long night with a sick child; same for getting freshly showered. It makes them feel better able to cope when they are clean and pulled together. We rely on donations exclusively to be able to provide these simple but valued items. The need is year round.
The Happy Room also has toys that are given to patients for birthdays, going home gifts, procedure prizes, and to restock the playrooms so patients and siblings have something to do. These too are new and donated. Occasionally, we send a call our for items that get used the most (playdoh, watercolors, crayons)
