COURSE DEVELOPMENT/ MAJOR COURSE REVISION:
NUR 529 Revision: Developed SOAP note case studies and I-Human Simulation activities with clinical presentation card, a tool for assisting nurse practitioner students in developing their clinical judgement skills and to teach them how to develop differential diagnosis.
NUR 305 Revisions: In the NUR 305 course we adjusted the exams and topics for optimal learning, we cover two to three topics for each exam. The students take five regular exams and a final exam that covers the five most missed items from each exam plus the remaining two lectures they have not been tested on. We also added Lippincott course point, a web learning platform that includes mastery quizzing for each chapter, Picmonics© videos (short, engaging, comical videos), concepts in action animations, interactive modules (pretest/learning activity/posttest), and journal articles. Each topic in the course has assignments in course point that align with the content we cover. The spring groups are already strong and summer are too. Improvement was noted in the Fall 2022 scores. So far the summer 2022 students are performing well in their second semester courses (89-90 on their exams so far). Pharmacology adopted the course point product and Adult Health is adopting it. All instructors incorporated frequent breaks and interactive activities including Socratic questions and practice NCLEX style questions. Next Gen Quizzing: I wrote five quizzes in ATI that use NGN format. One quiz is an illustration quiz that demonstrates each type of NGN question, this quiz is used with the introduction to NGN format session. I developed a short introductory ppt on how to approach testing and NGN format. I recorded the first session in fall 2022. I am using it as an assignment in the course
NUR 465: Complex Client Systems for RNs (2022). Revised the course in collaboration with the college of continuing education. We incorporated more video learning and interactive activities. We revised the writing activities and associated rubrics. New literature and teaching activities were added to the modules. The modules were reorganized, topic introduction videos were added to each, and the course objectives were updated. We also adopted the Lippincott advanced medical-surgical critical care virtual simulations (vSim). The course underwent quality matters review in Fall 2022 and received QM certification.
NUR 305: Human Pathophysiology (2021). Revised the layout of the content including rearranging topics to flow with the health assessment course. Also reduced the amount of content covered per exam to 2-3 topics per test. Increased the number of exams to five regular tests and one final exam. This will keep students focused and allow the course faculty to spend more time on essential concepts. We added anatomy and physiology quizzes to the course. Each quiz is available for one week and closes the night before the lecture on the topic. The purpose of the quizzes is to engage the students in a review of foundational anatomy and physiology concepts required to understand the content presented in class. The reading guides used previously in the course were converted to study guides for each topic. Each study guide includes activities, charts, and questions that the student can complete to gauge their knowledge of the subjects. Students use the Davis Advantage and Edge websites to evaluate their learning and practice taking NCLEX style questions.
NUR 529: Advanced Pathophysiology (2021). Dr. Cheryl Hines and I did a major revision of the course. All content was updated, new materials were developed using a new document format (sway by Microsoft). We recorded video lectures for each topic in the course and created new tests. We also added quizzes, newly written case studies, and discussion board activities to this course.
NUR 419: Complex Client Systems transition to fourth semester. I collaborated with Dr. Paige Johnson, Dr. Haley Strickland, Dr. Betty Key, Dr. Cheryl Hines, and the Community Health faculty to revamp and move the complex client course moved to fourth semester and the community health course moved to fifth semester. The 225-hour clinical preceptorship decreased to 180 hours and the senior class was split into two groups. This reduced the number of senior students completing their preceptorship at the same redesigned from a three-semester credit hour, seven-week course into a five-credit hour, fifteen-week course. The complex client course picked up the 45 clinical hours dropped from the leadership course, increasing the clinical hour requirement to 90 hours (2 semester hours). The learning objectives and content were revised according to outcome data obtained from NCLEX reports, employer surveys, and faculty and student feedback. In the old course, students completed eight hours per week in the clinical setting for five weeks. In the new course, the students complete a four-week, clinical rotation for two consecutive days (Tu/W or W/Th). The didactic hours were not changed but the class schedule was adjusted so that less content was covered each week. In the previous half semester format, content was delivered in an eight-hour block one day a week for seven weeks. In the new course, the students attend a three-hour class per week for the duration of the semester (15 weeks). The transition occurred in spring 2019 and required the faculty to teach two complex client courses for fourth and fifth semester students.
NUR 529: Advanced Pathophysiology (2017-2018). Dr. Cheryl Hines and I did a major revision of the course. All content was updated, new materials were developed using a new document format (sway by Microsoft). We recorded video lectures for each topic in the course and created new tests. We also added quizzes and newly written case studies to this course.
NUR 345: Perioperative Nursing (2012-2013). Developed the course shell in the blackboard learning space for an interim term course for upper division nursing students who had completed the first semester in upper division. Dr. Leslie Cole and I worked together to develop the content for this course.
