Favorite Thing About My Profession:

My favorite thing about nursing is leaving for the day knowing I made a difference. This is the reason I left my previous career and became a nurse. I also believe that it is important to me that nursing a patient back to health from the most decompensated state is just as important as helping and individual in the end of life process die with dignity, compassion, love, and be free of pain.

Virtues:

While every day we make decisions based on observations as nurses. We also are sometimes quick to form ideas and conclusions based on these observations. One of my virtues is to understand before making decisions. A family member who is having a difficult time through their loved one's critical state may react in a non-traditional way which we may think of as aggressive, offensive, anxiety filled, weird, or just not what we need to have in the unit for the day. We must also remember what it is like to be on the other side of the desk as a family member. We do not know what challenges this individual is facing at the moment and what feelings are going through their mind and body. We must maintain kindness and compassion before we judge. I carry a card in my briefcase from a family member thanking me for the kindness and compassion I gave their parent while we decided to move towards comfort measures with them. Initially I was quick to judge, but when I took the time to understand and empathize I was able to but labels and judgment aside allowing me to treat both patient and family with kindness, compassion, and love.
