NBCHPN 2013 Recipient -Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse of the Year Award As a hospice nurse with close to 20 years in the field, I have spent the last 15 years as an after-hours nurse caring for patients and families during the night hours. At this point in my career, my primary goal is to facilitate improvement of hospice and palliative care through innovation, education, research, and advocating for professional improvement. As such, I am active in educating colleagues in state of the art practice, and both our community and government in the role and importance of hospice and palliative care. As the wave of baby boomers crests over the next few decades, hospice and palliative care will grow at an unprecedented rate, and our healthcare system will be critically challenged. As hospice and palliative care professionals, we need to educate our government leaders on local, state and national levels to understand the importance of what we do, and be actively involved in the transformation of healthcare to support excellent end of life care. As a medical device innovator my mission is to invent medical devices and procedures that improve patient comfort and care while decreasing healthcare costs, iatrogenic complications, and make patient care easier. As such, one of the most important devices and procedures I have invented allows for easy, comfortable and discreet delivery of medication rectally when the oral route fails. The device will allow more hospice patients to die comfortably and remain at home in their last days.
