Exploring Utah Nurses’ Safety in the Workplace

UNA’s Fall Conference will focus on workplace and medication safety.  Speakers will incorporate strategies to address safety issues faced by nurses employed in all settings including hospitals, schools, public health, education, clinics and offices.

We are excited to host RaDonda Vaught, BSN, live via video, "Criminalizing Errors," in an hour presentation and 30-minute Q&A.

Ms. Vaught will share her profound personal story. Her case made headlines in March 2022 when a jury found her guilty of criminally negligent homicide and gross neglect of an impaired adult in the death of a patient to whom she accidentally gave the wrong medication.  She will speak on the impact this sentinel event has had on her life and her profession, along with the implications of the legal actions that followed.  A passionate advocate for safety and improvement, her story will be one that is not easily forgotten.

UNA is also pleased to feature Utah’s own

  • Scott Christensen, PhD, MBA, APRN, ACNP-BC, Sr. Nursing Director and Nurse Scientist at the University of Utah Health Hospitals and Clinics on “Breaking the Silence: Speaking Up About Workplace Violence” and
  • Brittania Doxstader, MSN, BHA, RN, Clinical Risk and Safety Manager (ED/Trauma /Behavioral Health Continuum), Intermountain Health  on “Voices for Safety.”
  • Chris Snyder, Chief of Police (Ret.), Associate Director, University of Utah Health Security on “Protecting the Protectors: Five Safety Tips for Nurses”
  • Rebecca Blair-Stevenson, DNP, MSN-Ed, MS-Epi, RN, CNE, Chair, UNA Government Relations Committee on “UNA Focus on Workplace Violence: Current Efforts at the State Level”
  • Luisa Echeverria, DNP, MSN, RN, UNA Representative to ANA Membership Assembly on ANA Focus on Workplace Violence: Report from ANA Hill Day 2025”

Audience engagement activities, including audience polling, Q & A, and breakout discussion sessions, are incorporated throughout the day.

Speakers

RaDonda Vaught
RaDonda Vaught BSN

RaDonda Vaught was the subject of one of the highest profile healthcare criminal cases in recent years. She holds a BSN and a Certificate in Leadership from Western Kentucky University. While working as a BSN prepared registered nurse, Mrs. Vaught committed a medication error that ended the life of a patient in 2017. She was charged under administrative law by the Tennessee Department of Health, leading to the revocation of her nursing license by the Tennessee Board of Nursing in a July 2021 hearing. Additionally, she was charged under criminal law and found guilty by jury trial of two felony charges in March of 2022: Negligent Homicide, and Abuse of an Impaired Adult, with placement on an Elder Abuse registry in the state of Tennessee. Mrs. Vaught is uniquely qualified to speak first hand on the impact this sentinel event has had on her life and her profession, along with the implications of the legal actions that followed. A passionate advocate for safety and improvement, her story will be one that is not easily forgotten.
