    Ashley Colnett
Ashley Colnett BSN, RN, CDCES, CSN

Diabetes Technology & Best Practices for School Nurses

Ashley graduated with her BSN and completed her School Nurse certification at Seton Hall University. She has worked in various fields of nursing, including Postpartum, School Nursing, and Diabetes Education. While she was a substitute school nurse, she discovered something scary--she knew practically nothing about Type 1 diabetes! It was her own personal former school nurse who mentioned Camp Nejeda as a place to work and learn all about Type 1 diabetes. In 2012, unbeknownst to her at the time, she started her love affair with diabetes, by going to work at Camp Nejeda. It changed her life forever. Fast forward to present day, and she has been a camp nurse for 13 years now, serves on their Medical Committee, and is employed as their Education & Technology Coordinator. It was through her working connections at camp, that a Pediatric Endocrinologist gave her the idea that she should be working in diabetes full time. She didn't even know there was such an option in nursing! Through a series of events, she ended up leaving school nursing, obtaining her 1000 hours of diabetes education, and sitting for her CDE exam. Ashley has been a Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist since 2015, and continues to work with both the adult and pediatric populations for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. But, her first love will always be for Type 1 diabetes and the children it affects. Her diabetes education career has been with Atlantic Health, Robert Wood Johnson, and Hunterdon Healthcare System. She is a CPT (certified pump trainer) for all the major pump companies and is no longer afraid of insulin pumps! Most recently, she served on the NJ DOE Task Force for updating the guidelines for students with diabetes. She loves giving educational presentations and has been honored to be asked for various school districts over the years. After all, school nurses are very close to her heart.
