Dr. Wachter has been recognized as one of the 50 most influential physician executives in the U.S. for 2016 and one of the 100 most influential people in healthcare. He is a professor and chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directs the 60-physician Division of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Wachter coined the term "hospitalist" in 1996 and is generally regarded as the "father" of the hospitalist field, the fastest-growing specialty in the history of modern medicine. His work has been featured in numerous media appearances, including television and radio, and he has written for major publications such as the New York Times, The Atlantic, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.
