This presentation will address the importance of establishing a Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) program in all correctional settings and will demonstrate why these programs contribute to safer correctional facilities, safer communities, healthier individuals and decreased liability for correctional facilities.
Topics discussed will include the risks associated with untreated substance use disorders, including benzodiazepine use disorder, practical guidelines for establishing a MAT program in a correctional setting, legal considerations, and the importance of engaging all stakeholders (community, security staff, mental health and medical staff) in the planning and implementation of MAT programs. Finally, the presentation will address the importance of continuity of care and coordination with community-based opioid treatment programs.

Chief Policy Advisor for the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office
Carl Anderson, RN, BSN, CCHP is the Chief Policy Advisor for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, overseeing the delivery of service as it relates to the medical and mental health care provided by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. In that position, Mr. Anderson assisted in implementing our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program involving community support and commitment from four of our local Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs).
