The New CMS Patient Safety Structural Measures calls on Hospitals that receive Medicaid/Medicare funding to “implemented written policies and protocols to cultivate a just culture that balances no-blame and appropriate accountability and reflects the distinction between human error, at-risk behavior, and reckless behavior."  

This presentation will outline a systematic approach to achieve this goal and support our workforce in delivering safe care.

Speakers

Lori Paine

Vice President and Patient Safety Officer at Rochester Regional Health (RRH)

In her role as Vice President and Patient Safety Officer, Lori is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management programs. Her portfolio includes the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP), culture assessments, event reporting, root cause analysis, Just Culture, and workplace violence prevention. Lori is Champion-trained in Just Culture and co-leads RRH’s Just Culture program. She has presented to audiences and consulted with hospitals both nationally and internationally. Her areas of particular interest include mindful organizing, risk assessment, and Just Culture. Lori is an adjunct faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and associate faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Nazareth College of Rochester, a Master’s degree in Applied Behavioral Science and Change Management from Johns Hopkins University, and a Doctorate in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Prior to joining RRH, Lori served as Senior Director of Patient Safety for the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her career also includes experience in clinical care, patient care management, hospital administration, product line development, and work process redesign
