Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) , under the umbrella of the State of Connecticut , Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a Student Nurse (PCN 139209) to join our team in Middletown. This position will assist in nursing services within one of our state's premiere mental health hospitals. Find out more information on this great opportunity below!

Position Highlights

  • Positions: One approved position, with additional anticipated openings
  • Work Hours: Part-time, Minimum of 8 hours per week
  • Work Shift: First shift, Flexible hours based on your schedule
  • Location: 1000 Silver Street, Middletown, CT

Appointment to this class may not exceed six (6) months, the equivalent of 1040 hours, in a fiscal year and permanent status cannot be attained while working in this classification.

What Our Nurses Do

What Student Nurses Do

  • Receive training on implementing, evaluating and documenting care of patients adhering to hospital and care center policies and standards of professional nursing practice;
  • Consistently demonstrates the mission, vision, values, and guiding principles of the state agency;
  • Assists with making rounds and giving direct care;
  • Confers with nurses and physicians on other shifts regarding condition of patients/clients;
  • Assesses patients/clients medical psychosocial needs;
  • Works collaboratively with members of an interdisciplinary team in planning direct care;
  • Educates patients/clients and their families towards an awareness and understanding of health and illness.

Connecticut Valley Hospital opened in 1868 as the State’s public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness. Throughout its history, it has experienced the multitude of medical, social and political changes affecting such facilities. Today, CVH is comprised of 17 inpatient units over two campuses (Middletown and Hartford).

Please Note

  • A comprehensive medical examination, including a drug screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience

Positions in this class will be used for training purposes. They will be limited to students currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of nursing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Student currently enrolled and attending an accredited program to become a Registered Nurse (RN).

Special Requirements

  • Incumbents in this class must be CPR certified.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully maintain an F Endorsement for transportation purposes.

Character Requirements

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for permanent appointment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain patients/clients; may have exposure to disagreeable conditions, communicable and/or infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive patients/clients.

Compensation Guidelines

Compensation will be $20.00 per hour.
