Position Description

The Resident R.N. position includes promoting educational aspects of well being to all staff
and campers during the camp season. The following outline describes the responsibilities of the
Resident R.N.

● Promoting personal hygiene within the camp community
● Proper eating and sleeping habits
● Recognition of the on-set of true illness
● Recognizing the need for TLC by staff and campers
● Immediate treatment of injured or ill person
● Continued follow up care of injured or ill person
● Arrangements for emergency care at a hospital or admission to a hospital
● Screening of all staff and campers upon arrival at camp and prior to all trips beyond one
day
● Screening of staff and campers after trips if any accident has occurred while away
● Checking online medical records and allergies before administering care/medication
● Commitment to treating everyone in our community with respect and confidentiality

Record Keeping Work:
*keep a daily log of all persons reporting to Health Cabin
*write and submit all required reports to local and state officials or to the state engineering
department (contagious diseases, stitches, etc.)
*letters to parents if camper has to spend a night in the Health Cabin or for any other
specified reason.
*written list to Program Director or person in charge of camp for camper non-participation of
activities due to medical excuse
*Recording of phone calls with parents
•Verbal report to Camp Director, Program Director or person in charge of camp on a daily basis
regarding overall health status at camp
• Clinic hours at Health Cabin
•Available 15 minutes prior to each meal time and after Evening Program for follow up treatment as
necessary
•Constant attention for all admitted patients including securing food as needed from kitchen
•Visual screening of kitchen staff daily to avoid any epidemic situations
•Cooperation with Director if epidemic situation occurs - to separate affected individuals appropriately
•Identifying supplies which are running low and notifying Director
•Securing prescription drugs under lock and key at all times
•Ensuring all medicines are clearly labeled
•Filling and replenishing first aid kits as needed
•Keeping all medical forms in alphabetical order, copying forms for trips
•Making night rounds to cabins with medications to be administered as necessary
•Keeping Health Cabin clean and neat
•Monitoring menus and making suggestions regarding nutrition as necessary
•Administering allergy/insulin shots as necessary
•Administering all meal time medications at meals


Camp Runoia's philosophy includes approaching health care through a preventative system. People
come to camp healthy and we like to keep it that way. The majority of our staff are trained in CPR and
many have American Red Cross First Aid Certification. Camp Runoia is accredited by the American
Camping Association and voluntarily upholds the highest standards of health and safety. In addition we
attempt to reduce risk by maintaining the plant and facilities and adhering to all camp policies.

The Health Supervisor will receive standing orders from Camp doctor prior to the camp season. Child
abuse education is included in our training for all staff during pre-camp orientation. In addition, the OSHA
required Hepatitis and contagious disease workshop is included in our training session. In the absence of a
Health Supervisor on staff at Camp Runoia, the Resident R.N. will conduct these services if certified,
otherwise an outside source will be contracted.

End of Season: the Health Team will work together to close the Health Cabin at the end of the season
including but not limited to: removing expiring medications and giving to Director for disposal, separating
and inventory-ing liquids to move to Farm House cellar for winter storage, inventory-ing all
non-medication, non-liquid supplies in the Health Cabin, storing clean linens, cleaning the Health Cabin
including refrigerators and bathrooms, cleaning trash and recycling bins.

Applying for a 90 day Maine Nursing license is the responsibility of the applying R.N if they do not
