Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland, a part of Christiana Care Health System is seeking an RN to work with the IV Therapy Team. We are currently hiring for a RN to work 36 hours per week on the Day shift for our Vascular Access Nursing Unit at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. While shift is predominately 7a-7p, person selected needs to be flexible for varying hours. Weekend and Holiday requirements per the guideline of the department.
The IV Therapy Register Nurse will serve as an expert in the care of Vascular Access Devices (VAD). The IV Therapy (IVT) Nurse will work with other staff nurses to: advance nursing practice, improve patient outcomes and provide clinical expertise. The IV Therapy Nurse will serve as an expert and resource to staff and will work collaboratively with the Director, Nurse Manager and Physicians. In addition, the IVT Nurse will provide leadership, flexibility and be a change agent. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Essential Job Functions: • Assess patients with regards to vascular access needs, based on diagnosis, medication regime, medical history and length of stay. • Proficiently performs IV starts and phlebotomy associated with IV starts. • Places peripheral inserted central lines. • Provides patient teaching regarding PICC line care and maintenance. • Troubleshoots complications of Vascular Access Device (VAD) including declotting of VADs. • Recognizes abnormal conditions or potential problems and takes appropriate action. • Implements physician’s orders according to needs and established nursing policies and procedures. • Contacts physicians for medical orders to discuss placement of mid to long term devices. • Maintains detailed medical records pertaining to patient care rendered. • As needed, provides 1:1 education of staff with regard to all aspects of vascular access assessment, insertion, care and maintenance. • Participates in quality assurance programs/audits to promote efficient and quality patient care.
Requirements
Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Licenses / Certifications: Required: Registered Nurse with current MD license or compact state. American Heart Association BLS certification. Preferred: PICC competency. Experience: Prior IV Therapy experience with willingness to learn new techniques. Demonstrates competency in placement of peripheral IV catheters.
Work Schedule: Hours vary depending on needs of the unit and must be flexible. Physical Requirements: Prolonged standing, walking and the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Performance Requirements: • High level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access device selection. • Has ability to work independently. • Demonstrates excellent communication and teaching skills.
