Position Description

Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) seeks a talented professional to serve as a College Health Nurse Practitioner. SCSU is a diverse and student-centered university dedicated to academic excellence, access, and service for the public good. The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.

The Nurse Practitioner will work independently to provide college health medical care to all eligible patients which includes the promotion of health and prevention of disease as well as evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness and acute medical issues. The Nurse Practitioner must understand the values, beliefs and attitudes of a culturally diverse student population to inform a culturally-responsive approach to student health care. The Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively with the Student Health Services team to engage in a variety of tasks associated with the day-to-day clinical operations of the Student Health Center in accordance with departmental policies, and procedures. Additionally, as a part of a larger team focused on a holistic approach to student well-being, the Nurse Practitioner will work with colleagues in the Center for Well-being, Counseling Services and Student Health on the development, implementation, and evaluation of relevant health education/promotion programs for SCSU's undergraduate and graduate student population.

The College Health Nurse Practitioner must possess a current license to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut, demonstrate completion of a Nurse Practitioner program from an accredited educational institution with a concentration in adult and/or family practice, and have licensure (per Public Act 89-389) as an APRN. The Nurse Practitioner must maintain appropriate certification from a national accrediting body and be certified in Basic Life Support for the professional rescuer and. The Nurse Practitioner must have two to three years of previous professional nursing experience, with gynecological experience required. College Health, Emergency Room or Acute Care Medicine experience is preferred. The Nurse Practitioner must also have the ability to interact effectively with others; demonstrate interest in and ability to relate to college age students; have good written and verbal communication skills; and be able to work autonomously as well as in collaboration with other members of the health care team within Student Health Services.
