Position Description
Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time, 40 hours/week, Nursing Lab and Clinical Associate in the Health Sciences Center. The standard work schedule is Monday – Friday, with occasional Saturdays based on program needs. The regularly anticipated hours are 10:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Flexibility to accommodate training and program needs as early as 6:30 a.m. will be required. This is a non-bargaining, non-exempt, grade 29 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Under supervision and/or direction, incumbents in this position oversee students using national standards of care and Lab Manager and faculty approved standardized evaluation criteria. Through the use of standardized criteria, Lab Manager and faculty direction, and scope as a registered nurse, the incumbents guide students in practicing patient care skills and consult with the Lab Manager and Course Coordinator regarding any student weaknesses.
General services include, but are not limited to: providing an educational environment where student end of program outcomes are promoted through demonstrating nursing skills with competence; developing and replicating skills simulation models that promote achievement for all students and professional growth for faculty; creating positive and safe physical, social, and working environments that facilitate learning; increasing capacity to support growing student enrollment; promoting community awareness of the College nursing program by developing relationships with interested persons and organizations; and incorporating cross-cultural knowledge and diverse learning styles into simulated clinical practice. Regular contacts include faculty, staff and students.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Facilitate safe practice experiences in the Nursing Skills Lab using national standards of care by working with individual and groups of nursing students as they practice required nursing skills.
- Use up to date evidence-based practice and faculty and Lab Manager approved standardized evaluation criteria to assess student performance in campus laboratories.
- Provide skill review workshops and student remediations.
- Assist Lab Manager and Faculty in adjusting student support based on student learning needs and appropriateness using evidence-based practice and teaching methods and patient safety goal guidelines.
- Set up, break down, and maintain teaching labs for faculty-led on-campus labs.
- Conduct inventory; restock, repurpose, and create supplies.
- Set-up and maintain all technological equipment for student and faculty use, diagnose problems with equipment and make appropriate referrals for correction. Provide routine lab maintenance including cleaning, repairing, and troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment (i.e. IV equipment, manikins, medication carts, etc.).
- Participate in Lab and department meetings; provide input on curriculum recommendations, including clinical planning, supervision, and evaluation.
- Assist Lab Manager to orient new faculty and staff to equipment, supplies, and laboratory procedures.
- Act as a role model and resource for students in general matters pertaining to the nursing program and practice, and mentor students with special projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- Three years nursing experience in acute care settings.
- Working knowledge of the methods, procedures and techniques of nursing work, tools, equipment and materials used in the trade, and hazard/safety precautions; of electronic medical records and current medication delivery methods and nursing skills.
- Skill in verbal and written communications, interpersonal relationships, organization, and using Microsoft Office Suite; in using electronic medical records and a bar code system for medication administration.
- The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience precepting nursing students or new graduates.
- Cover letters are encouraged and preferred.
Hiring Range: $34.84-$45.29 per hour. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $55.75 per hour.
