Job Description:

The Intake Nurse is responsible for screening clinically complex referrals to determine if the client meets the necessary medical criteria for admission. The nurse will provide a clinical escalation pathway to the BILH BS Transfer team when needed. Works with all referral sources including but not limited to hospital EDs, clinics, self-referrals to maintain access to bedded programs and assign patients to clinically appropriate beds. Training, evaluation and competencies for this role are overseen by a Nurse Leader to the department.

Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities:

  • Screens clients seeking potential admissions for inpatient stay.
  • Reviews current and past medical history, substance abuse history, and determines if client meets clinical eligibility for admission.
  • Determines if a client meets medical clearance based on intake
  • Determines if a client meets psychiatric clearance prior to admission.
  • Works in compliance with Nursing Practice Guidelines which foster safe, cost effective and quality patient care. Maintains and displays knowledge of current professional and clinical issues and practices through participation in a professional organization and certification in the field of nursing. Uses evidence-based resources to implement necessary changes in the delivery of nursing care and/or nursing practice.
  • Give patient report to receiving nurse as appropriate
  • Works with necessary stakeholders to facilitate timely admissions as needed.
  • Fosters a systematic awareness of the diversity that exists within the health system, including culture, ethnicity, gender and age, and promotes an environment that is sensitive to the needs of diverse populations.
  • Call/speak to patients directly at times if clarification is needed.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy on medication refills.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

A background in addiction nursing is required, and a minimum of two years of medical experience is preferred. Requires an RN.

Must demonstrate ability to relate to a substance abuse treatment population in a sensitive manner, an interest and willingness to work in a multicultural setting and must share a customer service orientation. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics. Manages difficult or emotional client situations; Responds promptly to client needs and maintains confidentiality. Must be able to complete on-site CPR training/certification.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Schedule: 40 hours-Monday-Friday, 11am-7pm
