Position Description

Position Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the facility Administrator, this individual functions as an educational instructor in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Provides for ongoing in-service education as required by regulations and facility needs. The Instructor must be dependable, able to work independently, and have open communication with staff and students. 

Experience Required:

Experience as a Staff Developer in a Skilled Nursing Facility preferred, or experience as a charge nurse in a Skilled Nursing Facility with completion of an approved DSD training course.  

Ability To:

  • Assist with training, education and coordination of programs, policies and procedures.
  • Maintains updated, accurate records of attendance for all employees for in-service education
  • Provides orientation for new hires per regulation and facility policy.
  • Performs Skills evaluations on C.N.A.s upon hire, upon completion of 90 days and annually, and maintains records of Skills checks.
  • Develops in-service education calendar for all mandatory in-service meetings per regulations, and develops a monthly in-service calendar and distributes to all departments.
  • Develops and maintains the C.N.A. schedules and assures adequate C.N.A. staffing.
  • Performs routine infection control rounds in the nursing department
  • Provides one-to-one training to staff if needed to improve skills and/or knowledge of regulations, policies/procedures, etc.
  • Informs C.N.A.s of the need to renew their license and maintains an accurate record of license expiration dates for C.N.A.s and Licensed staff.
  • Provides in-service education and teaches in an organized manner, following a specific lesson plan and meets all requirements for mandatory hours per state regulation.
  • Attends Safety Committee meetings and/or is a member or chairperson of the safety committee.
  • Schedules employee annual physicals as required.
  • Performs TB skin tests for new employees and for all staff as needed.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Knowledge Of:

  • Current trends in nursing practices.
  • Must possess excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess excellent listening skills
  • Ability to be organized and be able to prioritize work, while complying with all state and federal regulations, facility policies, and procedures.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Active LVN or RN licensed in the State of California.
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • A minimum of three (3) years in Nursing, with a minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience as a licensed Nurse, and at least one (1) year full-time, of which must be in the provision of direct patient care in nursing facility (also long-term care facility). 
  • Evidence of continuing education and self-development. Within six (6) months of employment and prior to instructing a certification program, the Instructor must obtain a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education courses in planning, implementing and evaluation of educational programs in Nursing. (24-hour B.R.N approved DSD courses). These courses must be administered by an accredited educational institution and approved by the Board of Registered Nursing. A transcript of successfully completed courses shall be sent to the Department of California Code of Regulations (CCR). A copy will be kept on file in Personnel. 

    NOTE: If the applicant possesses a Nursing Teaching Credential, then submit a copy of the credential for Department review. If the credential is approved, then the twenty-four (24-hours of CEU) DSD course is not required. 

  • Clinical Competencies.
  • Possess a current CPR/First Aid Card.
  • Possess a valid and appropriate California driver's license.
