Position Overview

  • Job Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt, 10-Month
  • Location: GCS 1 and/or GCS 2
  • Reports to: School Operations Manager
  • Compensation:  Salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience and education as listed in the Licensed Vocational Nurse Compensation Table

  • Summary:   The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) main duties include providing first aid and CPR, administering medications, and providing specialized healthcare procedures and techniques to support specific health needs of individual students.  Relatedly, the LVN is responsible for supporting the maintenance of medical records, including immunizations.  The LVN supports general office and clerical duties, applying school procedures and upholding policies as requested by the School Operations Manager.

Responsibilities of the Licensed Vocational Nurse include, but are not limited to:

Health Care

  • Administers insulin or assists in the administration of insulin to diabetic students, including assisting with carbohydrate counting, the calculation of proper insulin dosages, and ensuring proper administration techniques; monitors blood glucose levels or supervises such monitoring for diabetic students
  • Performs specialized physical health care procedures, including but not limited to gastrostomy and nasogastric feedings, toileting, catheterizations, tracheotomy care, suction, ostomy care, diaper changes, nebulizer treatments, rectal diastat administration, glucagon administration, emergency care in an anaphylactic reaction, including administration of the epi-pen, and lifting and positioning physically disabled students
  • Receives, communicates, and records health notices, including recording information in SIS (e.g., Aeries); assists in the administration of medications to students as prescribed; ensures medications are taken to off-campus events (e.g., field lessons)
  • Initiates emergency procedures as needed, including, but not limited to, administering minor first aid and CPR to students and activating EMS or other follow- up care
  • Assists with scheduling and facilitating health examinations and annual screenings; performs specific screens for hygiene-related health issues. Documents findings and places information into student data records. May independently perform health screens following established procedures when authorized by a health care professional 
  • Under supervision, provides follow-up for health problems identified during vision, hearing, scoliosis, diabetic, dental and nutritional screenings using standardized information 
  • Collaborates with teachers, parents, and physicians concerning side effects and adjustments to medications; obtains physicians’ orders for medication needed at school and requests refills
  • Regularly reviews student immunization and health records; supports families to assure compliance with immunization laws
  • Maintains health referral forms, daily logs, and medical records
  • Monitors inventory of classroom and medical supplies, including first aid kits and nursing informational flyers and forms; assists in ordering, receiving and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of supplies as assigned
  • Works cooperatively with office and administrative staff regarding health related tasks, projects and information as needed
  • Adheres to legal requirements and policies related to the confidentiality of student records 
  • Receives training to provide specialized procedures to meet medical needs
  • May be asked to provide students, staff, and/or families with standardized information in areas related to hygiene, sleep habits, drug and alcohol abuse, fitness and nutrition.
  • Participates in appropriate staff trainings and meetings (e.g., IEPs, SSTs, conferences), as assigned
  • May provide CPR/First Aide/Epi Pen/Narcan administration trainings to staff, if certified to do so
  • Supports and reinforces school procedures

General Office and Operational Support

  • Welcomes visitors, answers phones, redirects inquiries as may be appropriate, and relays messages to staff in a timely manner
  • Receives and distributes mail and shipments
  • Supervises students while in the main office (e.g., for health needs, administrative action, etc.)
  • Supports the Schools Operation Manager with emergency preparedness and drills as requested
  • Models the Gabriella Charter Schools core values at all times; a visible and highly engaged

member of the school community

  • Other duties as assigned consistent with this health and front office support as requested by the School Operations Manager or school administration

  • Self-directed with the ability to work both autonomously and in teams
  • Strict adherence to rules regulations for the maintenance of a clean and sanitary environment
  • Demonstrates and models safe, prudent work behaviors and practices that result in a safe and healthy environment. 
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) highly preferred

Education and Experience

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Possession of a valid State of California License of Vocational Nursing or Registered Nursing
  • Possession of current CPR Certification and Red Cross First Aid certificated
  • At least one year of recent nursing experience, preferably in a school setting with children in grades K-8, or other comparable experience, is highly desirable


Physical Requirements

Continual speaking; sitting for extended periods of time; frequent and repeated standing, kneeling, crouching, squating, bending, reaching, walking, grasping and pinching; ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance; able to use both hands and legs simultaneously, to reach overhead, pull hand over hand, use fingers repetitively twisting or applying pressure with wrists or hands; have rapid mental/muscular coordination; maintain balance; have depth perception and ability to see to read small print and distinguished shades; have dexterity of hands and fingers needed to operate a variety of specialized health care equipment and a computer keyboard; physically able to provide rapid response to emergent situations throughout the school campus.

Environment

Requires that the incumbent work effectively under stressful situations and respond to the unpredictable behaviors of students.  Occasionally involves working outdoors and exposure to inclement weather. Infrequently involves exposure to traffic congestion. May involve exposure to hazardous waste.  Frequent use of a computer screen.  The office setting has uneven surfaces, frequent noise, and a quick work pace.
