Job Summary and Qualifications

The Lead Transporter you will deliver high-quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living, as well as transporting patients following safety processes. Under the supervision of the Director and House Supervisor, the Lead Transporter will assist the nursing staff in providing transport and patient care in accordance with Transporter skills/training and the needs of the Department, and will perform or assist with more advanced procedures based on one or more achieved specialty certifications. The Lead Transporter will comply with all hospital policies/procedures. In addition, the Lead Transporter will assist with ongoing training and/or precepting of new and current employees as directed by the supervisor. The Lead Transporter will be responsible for ensuring new processes, equipment, and other changes are communicated and/or taught to other Transporters. 

  • You will ensure proper handling of patients with comfort and safety.
  • You will escort patients to and from all departments and procedural areas needed, verifying order, isolation status, and patient identity.
  • You will communicate with unit nursing staff about transfer prior to transporting patient from the patient’s room and when returning the patient to the room.
  • You will follow guidelines documented on request for transport (e.g., O2, IV, stretcher vs. wheelchair).
  • You will demonstrate agility with conveying multiple articles (e.g., stretcher and IV pole).
  • You will ensure availability of adequate transport equipment at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • You will complete the patient safety checklist prior to transporting to all areas.
  • You will maintain patient privacy and dignity at all times as allowed. You will ensure confidentiality is maintained.
  • You will ensure equipment (stretcher) is properly functioning and will demonstrate protocol to handle malfunctions.
  • You will follow hospital and department policy for Standard Precautions or category of isolation appropriate to the patient.
  • You will demonstrate appropriate customer service skills with all customers (patient, patient’s family, physician, visitors, co-workers).
  • You will assist with maintaining adequate quantities of supplies/equipment in patient rooms, storage rooms, and will notify appropriate person(s) of items to be ordered.

What qualifications you will need

  • High School Graduate / GED
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
