Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job Summary

A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse with expertise in managing a defined specialty population. CNS practice focuses on applying evidence-based standards to deliver high-quality patient care and improve outcomes—either directly or by influencing the practice of others.

This role requires advanced clinical knowledge, strong communication and collaboration skills, the ability to mentor and educate, and effective change management strategies. The CNS supports clinical inquiry across three spheres of influence:

• Patient and family
• Nurses and nursing practice
• Organizational systems

Qualifications

• Education: Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN or MS) required
• Experience:
• Minimum two years of recent clinical obstetrical nursing experience
• At least two years of labor and delivery experience required
• Teaching experience preferred
• Licensure/Certifications:
• Licensed RN in good standing with the State of Michigan
• Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist
• Basic Life Support required within orientation period
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support required (if covering critically ill patient populations)
