Job Description Summary

**Join UVA Health's Main Operating Room Team**

Position Overview

As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) at UVA Health, you will provide specialized care for adult cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgical patients. You will work alongside a dedicated team of surgeons and healthcare professionals in a state-of-the-art environment, supporting complex surgical procedures such as minimally invasive surgeries, endovascular procedures, heart and lung transplants, mechanical circulatory support, and advanced aortic surgeries.

Our CVOR is equipped with 6 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including 2 Hybrid ORs. You will have the opportunity to work with nationally recognized surgeons and be part of a dynamic and innovative team providing life-saving care for a diverse patient population, including pediatric and adult patients with congenital and cardiovascular conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Internal Traveler positions are:

  • **Perioperative Care:** Deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to patients undergoing complex cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
  • **Intraoperative Patient Care:** Collaborate with the surgical team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the intraoperative care plan, taking into account handoff information and patient and family input.
  • **Operating Room Preparation:** Prepare the CV operating room by assembling equipment, supplies, and implants, ensuring functionality and availability for the procedure.
  • **Surgical Procedure Support:** Demonstrate proficiency in assisting with both open and closed heart procedures, ensuring safe and effective positioning, protection from injury, and optimal exposure of the surgical site.
  • **Safety Protocols:** Actively participate in the Universal Protocol and surgical timeout procedures, including conducting a fire risk assessment with the surgical team. Complete post-procedure pauses to ensure patient safety at the conclusion of each case.
  • **Cardiopulmonary and ECMO Support:** Maintain working knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO, assisting the team with the rapid deployment and management of these technologies when necessary.
  • **Instrument and Medication Verification:** Follow established protocols for instrument counts and take corrective action if discrepancies occur. Verify the accuracy of medications, concentrations, and expiration dates on the sterile field with the surgical team.
  • **Patient and Family-Centered Care:** Provide compassionate, developmentally appropriate, and culturally sensitive care, addressing the unique needs of both patients and their families during the perioperative period.
  • **Continuous Learning and Improvement:** Stay informed on the latest practices and developments in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery and share new information or changes in care with the healthcare team.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.

Experience: Varies

Licensure: Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull > 100lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, humidity, cold, heat, noise, outdoor climate, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Position Compensation Range: - Hourly
