Job Description

nurse forensic expertise, dedicated to meeting forensic medical needs is available for our community. Our scope of service includes any patient impacted by sexual assault (across the age range), interpersonal/familial violence (across the age range), pediatric physical abuse, elder abuse, and human trafficking. The forensic medical examination is offered to medically appropriate patients in a setting that is located just outside of the Emergency Department to provide privacy to patients that have been victimized. An attached waiting area allows for the patient’s support systems to be available during the examination. The forensic examiner team provides this service 24/7 in our ED and at two of our community-based Children’s Advocacy Centers.

Full-Time 0.9 FTE/72 hours biweekly

1100-2300/2300-1100

Every 3rd weekend, rotating holidays

Eligible for shift differentials

General Summary

Assists with the day-to-day operations of the Forensic Examiner Team, including clinical coverage, interdisciplinary alliance meetings, peer review of forensic team documentation, team and community education and other duties as required.

Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs forensic medical evaluations for patients that present or are referred to the Emergency Department or Children’s Advocacy Center following victimization.
  • Assists in the development of appropriate standards and practices.
  • Mentors clinical staff on performing forensic medical examinations and provides peer review of forensic documentation.
  • Promotes resource sharing in the community leading to improved response for victims of crime.
  • Protects patient confidentiality by promoting professional staff communications.
  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Assists the Manager with daily operations of the team, including but not limited to arranging call coverage, community meeting attendance, and community education.
  • Variation of duties may result based on the assigned customer care unit(s). This may include differences in the specific clinical skills required of the RN. Unit based skill lists outline expectations beyond the house wide RN requirements. SYS-NURS-L Nursing Education Requirements Policy outlines current certification(s) required for specific areas of nursing practice and is considered to be part of the job description.
  • In addition to requirements specified in the license and certification section below, current BLS certification for all areas of nursing practice is required.Current certification may be required for the following areas of nursing practice:Emergency Care Center – ACLS, PALSIntensive Care Center & MSCC Lead – ACLS, PALSL&D – ACLS, NRP, - Experienced L&D nurses will obtain within 6 months and new L&D nurses will obtain at 1 year of experienceNICU – NRPPEDS – PALSPCC/PACU/ENDO – ACLS, PALSProcedural – ACLS

Common Expectations

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Assists in performance evaluations, competency evaluations (as applicable), and the provision of orientation, training and continuing education of staff.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education

  • Bachelors Degree Required

Work Experience

  • 5 years Nursing experience. Required
  • 3 years In forensic nursing. Preferred and
  • Supervisory experience. Preferred

Licenses

  • Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Nurse Multi State License Upon Hire Required and
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adult/Adolescent within 180 days Required and
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Pediatric/Adolescent within 180 days Required and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required
