What You'll Do
The Orthopedic Triage Nurse (RN/LPN) provides specialized, telephone-based assessment and clinical guidance for patients experiencing musculoskeletal issues. This role involves evaluating symptoms, reviewing imaging or surgical history, advising on pain or injury management, and directing patients to appropriate care levels. The triage nurse ensures patients receive timely orthopedic care, improves clinical efficiency, and enhances the overall patient experience.
Orthopedic Telephone Triage
- Evaluate patient calls regarding joint pain, fractures, sprains, post-surgical symptoms, and orthopedic hardware concerns.
- Use clinical protocols and musculoskeletal expertise to determine care needs—ranging from home care and urgent visits to emergency evaluation.
- Review imaging, prior treatment plans, or surgical notes as needed to inform triage decisions.
- Educate patients on post-op care, activity restrictions, bracing, pain management, and when to seek follow-up.
- Provide guidance on safe use of orthopedic devices (crutches, braces, boots, etc.).
- Answer questions regarding medications (e.g., NSAIDs, opioids, anticoagulants) and potential side effects.
- Prioritize and schedule urgent appointments with orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, or imaging centers.
- Alert providers of potential surgical complications, wound issues, or urgent MRI/CT follow-up needs.
- Collaborate with cast techs, surgical schedulers, physical therapists, and radiology to streamline care.
- Accurately document all triage encounters in the EHR, including assessment, disposition, and advice given.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and follow orthopedic clinic protocols and state nursing guidelines.
- Contribute to quality improvement processes related to post-op care, readmissions, and patient follow-up.
- Think critically and remain calm in high pressure situations
- Communication clearly and empathetically with patients and providers
- Enjoy problem-solving and managing care workflows behind the scenes
What You’ll Need
- Active RN or LPN license in [State], in good standing.
- Experience in outpatient orthopedics, orthopedic surgery, or urgent care.
- Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience; at least 1 year in orthopedics, surgical, or emergency care preferred.
- Strong understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy, orthopedic procedures, and post-operative protocols.
- Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Familiarity with triage software or orthopedic EHR systems (e.g., Athenahealth, Epic).
- BLS certification; orthopedic certification (ONC) a plus.
- Bilingual (especially Spanish) preferred.
