This position provides acute and rehabilitative care for people with selected disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems. The components in this position include education, consultation, counseling, research, and administration.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Required)
1 - 2 years experience Clinical Nursing Medical-surgical nursing (Required)
Advanced knowledge of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing
Knowledge of adult learning principles
Participation in national professional organization: Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society™ preferred

Job Responsibilities
Conducts thorough, individualized needs assessment for patients with wound, ostomy, or continence problems with the participation of the patient, family, or support systems, when appropriate, prior to the development of the education plan and intervention. Assesses the patient for individualized treatment modalities to maximize patient outcomes specialty bed needs or other products
Pursues opportunities for professional growth by attending conferences and seminars pertinent to the WOC scope of practice. Actively participates in professional organizations pertaining to WOC care on a local/regional/national level. Participates in intradepartmental and Shared Governance Counsel meetings. Identifies knowledge and skills needed through self-assessment, peer review, and customer feedback. Defines goals for professional growth and participates in a variety of educational activities to maintain and enhance wound, ostomy and continence knowledge/ competence, in order to obtain/maintain certifications.
Develops a written educational plan from information obtained from the needs assessment and based on the components of the educational process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Coordinates the plan among health team members, patient, family, support system and/or continuum of care members.
Creates an educational setting conducive to patient/family learning and adequate resources. Provides individualized education to ostomy surgery patients and families, based on a progression from basic survival skills to advanced information for daily self-management in the areas of wound ostomy and continence to patients/family, and documents thoroughly. Determines the appropriate site for stoma placement, considering patient’s anatomical markings, physical capabilities and lifestyle. Provides appropriate written information to patients and staff including postoperative and discharge instructions, referral, and supplies needed.
Participates in ongoing evaluation of patient’s progress related to the treatment plan. An annual review of the educational process that includes educational materials and treatment protocols to maximize quality and patient outcomes
Works with Purchasing to find evidence-based products supporting continuous improvement. Manages WOC operations, and monitors specialty bed utilization. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team and integrates WOC knowledge and skills to provide educational experiences for nursing/medical staff. Develops policies, best practices, protocols and procedures. Is a client advocate and delivers care in a non-judgmental/non-discriminatory manner. Participates in and serves as a mentor to staff nurses in the care of those with selected disorders. Participates in the monitoring of individual patient and organizational wound/skin care/ostomy outcomes. Coordinates relevant data collection.
