Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)

Position Summary

The Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) provides safe, high-quality perioperative nursing care in accordance with the Nursing Process, the Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Code of Ethics, and the Scope & Standards of Practice. The OR RN functions as a clinical leader, ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective coordination, communication, and collaboration with the surgical team.

Essential Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive perioperative nursing care across all phases of surgery
• Prepare operating rooms, equipment, and supplies according to surgical and aseptic standards
• Perform circulating and/or scrub nurse duties as assigned
• Ensure patient safety, correct surgical site verification, and adherence to time-out procedures
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary team members
• Delegate and direct support staff appropriately while maintaining accountability for patient outcomes
• Maintain accurate documentation and compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
• Adhere to infection control, safety, and compliance policies
  
  

Education & Experience

Required:

• Registered Nurse Diploma
• Experience in a fast-paced, high-acuity hospital environment
  
  

Preferred:

• Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
• Prior Operating Room or perioperative nursing experience
  
  

Licensure & Certifications

Required:

• Current RN license in the state of Louisiana or compact state license
• Current BLS certification (American Heart Association)
  
  

Preferred:

• CNOR or other perioperative specialty certification
  
  

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of sterile technique and surgical procedures
• Excellent clinical judgment and attention to detail
• Effective communication and team collaboration skills
• Ability to prioritize, multitask, and work independently
  
  

Physical & Environmental Requirements

• Ability to lift, position, and transfer patients
• Prolonged standing and walking
• Routine exposure to blood, body fluids, surgical instruments, and communicable diseases
