Position Description
General Purpose
The Clinical Risk Nurse is responsible for managing the daily operations of the clinical risk company focusing on identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential risks related to patient care and operational processes. This role involves close collaboration with regional leadership, patient safety/legal teams, and the clinical operations team to foster a culture of safety, ensure regulatory compliance, and facilitate education based on lessons learned from incidents. The position aims to proactively reduce patient harm, improve communication and collaboration, and enhance the overall quality and safety of care delivery systems.
Essential Duties
- Risk Assessment and Identification: Proactively identify and evaluate potential and actual patient harm incidents and high-risk processes within clinical operations. Conduct regular risk assessments and monitoring to uncover potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards and protocols.
- Case Tracking and Analysis: Oversee incident file management, ensuring accurate and thorough documentation of all investigations. Utilize centralized reporting systems to track cases, analyze data, and identify trends and patterns that expose safety risks.
- Collaboration with Leadership and Teams:
- Collaborate with regional leadership to report trends, discuss risk reduction strategies, and support the oversight of quality and safety initiatives.
- Partner with the clinical operations team and Quality/Patient Safety/Legal departments to develop and implement action plans and process improvements to eliminate or decrease identified risks.
- Serve as a consultant and resource to leadership and staff on clinical risk management issues, policies, and practices.
- Reporting, Documentation, and Communication: Provide summaries of cases and data-driven analyses to regions and relevant stakeholders. Ensure effective communication regarding risk management goals and a culture of safety across all staff levels.
- Education and Training: Collaborate with clinical operations team to develop and implement education and training programs for staff on risk prevention strategies and best practices. Facilitate discussions and provide education on lessons learned from adverse events and near-misses to prevent future occurrences.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program required. Current, in good standing, registered nurse license required. Director of Nursing experience required. Regional leadership position in post-acute care preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of five to seven years of nursing experience in a post-acute care clinical environment, with one to three years in a risk management, quality improvement, or patient safety role preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to assess complex situations and develop effective strategies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and providing clear education.
- Proficiency with incident reporting systems, databases, and data analysis to manage and report on risk data effectively.
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, laws, and professional standards in healthcare.
- Certifications (Preferred): Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) certifications are preferred.
Compensation: Starting pay starts at $140,000 -depending on job related experience.
Physical Demands
This role requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, with occasional walking, standing, bending, and reaching. The ability to lift up to 20 pounds and visual acuity for reviewing detailed documents are necessary. Occasional travel to facilities or meetings may also be required.
