Status: Full Time (40 hours/week)

Department: Medical / Oncology (3 South)

Shift: Rotating shifts including every other weekend/holiday

The Professional Staff Nurse delivers and leads patient-centered care on a 23-bed med/surg oncology unit, using clinical expertise, collaboration, and independent judgment to achieve exceptional outcomes. This role offers hands-on experience with diverse diagnoses, chemotherapy and biologic therapies, and the opportunity to grow alongside a strong interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities:

Flexible scheduling options, including rotating/flexible shifts, night/weekend programs with premium pay (6 months nursing experience required for specialty programs).

  • Build strong, respectful working relationships by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, cultural awareness, and commitment to patients and colleagues while promoting safety, work-life balance, and healthy work practices.
  • Educate and empower patients, families, students, and new staff using adult learning principles; support transitions of care and serve as a preceptor or mentor as needed.
  • Deliver holistic, patient-centered care using the nursing process and Relationship-Based Care, setting daily goals, applying critical thinking, and communicating effectively across the care team.
  • Document care clearly and accurately to support continuity, safety, quality, and patient satisfaction.
  • Actively engage in professional development, shared governance, and change initiatives to enhance care quality and the practice environment.
  • Drive quality improvement by identifying opportunities, applying evidence-based practice, participating in multidisciplinary collaboration, and taking ownership of patient experience and outcomes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care, assess patient status, and apply growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Zero to two years of nursing experience; BSN preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills; able to lead others in applying the nursing process.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities, operate specialized equipment, and work effectively in a complex care environment.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, and lifting/positioning patients.

Licensure, Certifications & Clearances

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment or via Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • Graduate nurses must pass licensure exam within 6 months of hire or within one year of graduation.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification per AHA standards.
  • UPMC-approved national certification preferred.
  • Compliance with Act 34, OAPSA, and other required state/facility clearances.
