American Correctional Nurses Association

Join us as Joseph Bick, MD, CCHP leads a practical discussion of infectious diseases in the correctional medicine milieu, reflecting over three decades of evolving challenges and lessons learned. As many in our organization do, Dr. Bick considers infection control in carceral settings to be not only an essential component of clinical practice, but also a matter of public health and human rights.
Dr. Bick is a nationally recognized authority in infectious disease in carceral settings. After completing medical school at the University of Michigan and Infectious diseases training at Rush University in Chicago, Dr. Bick joined the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) in 1993 where for over thirty years he has served as infectious diseases consultant and clinical administrator.

Dr. Bick also served as a prison health care consultant in Malaysia and Myanmar, and as a Court Appointed Monitor in the Alabama prison system. In 2020 Dr. Bick accepted the role of Statewide Director of Healthcare Services for CDCR.

A distinguished leader in infectious disease and correctional medicine, Dr. Bick’s career is defined by a lifelong commitment to clinical excellence. From his foundational training to his current practice, he has emerged as a renowned expert and tireless advocate for the highest standards of care in HIV and infectious disease management. We are pleased and proud to have Dr. Bick discuss infectious disease in corrections based on the article that he co-authored in 2025. Title:  Infectious Disease in Corrections—An Overview

OBJECTIVES:

1.     Describe the evolving epidemiology and structural factors that shape infection risks in carceral environments. Participants will be able to explain how high baseline prevalence of infectious diseases, overcrowding, inadequate ventilation, and limited surveillance capacity contribute to increased transmission risk in jails and prisons.

2.     Apply evidencebased infection prevention and control strategies tailored to operational constraints of carceral facilities. Participants will be able to identify and implement practical, feasible interventions including screening, vaccination, ventilation improvements, outbreak response, and harmreduction approaches based on current CDC and Federal Bureau of Prisons guidance.

3.     Integrate ethical, publichealth, and patientcentered considerations into infectioncontrol decisionmaking in correctional settings. Participants will be able to evaluate how policies such as copay requirements, isolation practices, access to MOUD, and communication strategies influence both infection outcomes and resident wellbeing.

Grand Rounds sessions are free to all attendees. CME credit through the American Academy of Family Physicians is approved. Nursing, PA, and Mental Health CEU credit is also possible through agreements between the AAFP and your professional organizations.

We encourage you to invite your friends and colleagues to attend this session, which will inform us on infectious disease monitoring and control in our always challenging milieu of correctional medicine.

We hope you can attend this session of Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds. We expect it to be an excellent opportunity to gain practical information and networking opportunities. The Grand Rounds session will last one hour and will include ample time for questions, discussion, and networking.

Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds are usually held on the first and third Thursday of each month.
