Professional Achievements:

I have been able to achieve what I never even dreamed of, coming from a poor migrant family I was the first Hispanic nurse to be named as a Member of the Texas Board of Nursing! So that has allowed other Hispanics to now be on the BON. I have been and am on local, state, and national boards of nursing and various services. I have been DON and Dean of Nursing Schools, TNA District Nurse of the Year, MSN Outstanding Graduate Nursing Student, Sigma Theta Tau Excellence in Nursing Practice Award, Whos Who in College Teaching, Latino American Who's Who. Currently serve as President of local chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.

Favorite Thing About My Profession:

Being part of someone's life at times when it seems most difficult and being a support in the physical and emotional realm. Giving people support and hope, providing the best nursing care to every patient with care and understanding, kindness and compassion, utmost competency. Being aware that the family is also part of the patient care that needs comfort. My profession is seen as one of trust and it must be earned each day by doing what we are called to do...

Virtues:

I have enjoyed life in a very honest and forthright manner. Integrity is also major part of my life. Both of these were instilled early in life by both parents by examples as how they lived their lives. My dad always said "your word is who your are". "If you want honor and respect, you have to keep your word and be an honest person". My Mom taught me to help our fellow man, share your food and home. Caring and nurturing were virtues I learned from her. I believe and maintain high ethical values in my profession and respect the rights of my patients. I have a responsibility to them for their well being, safety, and autonomy.
